Entry Fee: $25 per entrant. Payment must accompany this registration form. Registration deadline is noon the day of the race. Entry Fee includes a race packet filled with local discounts and gifts.
Equipment: Each Burro will be equipped with a regulation packsaddle packed with prospector’s paraphernalia and must include a pick, shovel, and gold pan. The minimum combined weight of the packsaddle and gear shall be 33 pounds. Loss of all or part of the packsaddle and paraphernalia may result in disqualification. The weight will be checked at the start and the finish of the race. The burro will be lead by a halter to which is attached a rope not to exceed 15 ft in length. This rope may be single knotted or looped. A 1” or greater rope diameter is recommended. No other rope or strap may be attached to the burro or the saddle. A regulation halter must be used. A jack chain is allowed only on a jack and must be used with a pressure and release method: abuse of this method may result in disqualification. Halters will be checked at the race start and finish.
Burro: The following definition will be used in selecting a burro. The word burro comes from the Spanish word meaning donkey. A donkey is defined as being an ass. They have chestnuts on the forelegs only, while other animals of the same species, such as mules or horses, have them on hind and forelegs. The tail has no hair, except on its lower part, which has a brush. All runners must keep their burros under control. Any burro that interferes with another runner or burro may be disqualified. Any contestant mistreating his or her animal may be disqualified. No needles, electric prods, narcotics, clubs, whips, other than the halter rope may be used. The Colorado Humane society rules also apply.
Course Description: Start is at Citizen’s Park in downtown Idaho Springs, head out of town up the Oh My Gawd Road, up to an historic old mining camp location , down Rose Gulch to the Argo Mill and through town to the Elk’s Lodge, finish line. Approx. 4 miles.
    Course Rules:
The route will be clearly marked and must be followed. Do not cut switchbacks. Any burro leaving the course must be returned to the course without shortening the distance of the course. On the course a contestant shall not interfere with the other contestants by deliberate personal contact or receive help deliberately from others, nor shall he or she use anything other than the speed of travel to keep from being passed. The contestant shall not startle or scare any opponent’s burro to keep from being passed. No one is authorized to run with a runner at anytime while on the course. Any course judge or authorized person may stop a burro while on the trail to check out equipment, runner or burro. If the judge feels that a violation has occurred, runner and burro may be disqualified. Should a contestant be disqualified by a race official, he may continue the race and may appeal his or her grievance to the race director. All decisions of the race director will be final.
Team: A runner and burro constitute a team. Runner and burro starting the race must remain a team throughout the contest. No assistants will be allowed to accompany the team. The runner may push, pull, drag or carry the burro. The runner shall at no time progress except under his or her own power. The carry and use of firearms will not be permitted.
Awards: A finishing team consists of a man or woman and a burro, crossing the finish line as a unit. The man or woman may be leading or following the burro, but the burro’s nose crossing the finish line will determine the finishing time and the race winners. Every finisher will receive a prize. Prize money will be awarded to the first and second finisher. In the case of a tie, any prize money involved will be divided equally between the finishers who tied. Women and Men’s Divisions: 1st Place: $150, 2nd Place: $100, 3rd Place: $50, 4th and 5th Place will receive local gift certificates.
